ie 7 hangs using 100 cpu

IE 7 hangs using 100% CPU

OK, so I'm running IE 7 under Vista and I'm in the Vista newgroups page. I try to reply to a discussion I started and nothing happens. There's a little error icon at the bottom of the window (status bar) but it doesn't say what the error is. I try replying again, still nothing happens then IE just hangs. I click the (X) at the top of the window and another window comes up saying IE 7 is unresponsive, do I want to restart or wait. I click restart and another window comes up saying it's collecting information an may take a few minutes. 10 minutes later still nothing. I start the task manager and IE 7 is using almost 100% of the CPU. I try end task, and nothing happens. I try it again and finnaly a window pops up asking if it's OK to send an error report to Microsoft - so I click OK. Finally a window pops up saying IE is restarting.
After restarting IE is again totally unresponsive and I can't end it with the task manager, so I log out of Vista. I log back in and start IE - again same problem.
So I restart Vista, log in, start IE - same problem. OK, so IE is now totally hosed on my Vista.
Is there any way I can reinstall IE without reinstalling Vista?

Hi, I started to see this with other programs the cpu jumps to 100% and freezes the computer. For myself I have 760 mbs of ram.

Yes, a lot of people have had this problem.
It is usually caused by plug-ins that IE7 is incompatible with. In my opinion this is still a IE problem, because it should be able to continue to work with an incompatible plug-in. It should disable the plug-in rather than letting itself get locked up.
Most of the time the problem is Java 5. I installed and uninstalled Java 1.5.0_07, and each time I installed it IE7 stopped responding, and each time I uninstalled it, IE7 started working again.
If you don't have Java installed you will have to look for something else, but that has been the biggest culprit.
If
you need Java, the Java 6 Beta, which is available form the Sun Java site, seems to be compatible.

I filed a bug report per Colin's advice.
I deleted "everything" per Barb's advice. No deal, same problem, although I can now stop IE with task manager.
I haven't used any plug-ins yet.
I haven't installed Java, but I did notice that Java 1.5.0_07 was installed, so it must have come with Vista or something else installed it (i.e. Firefox?).
So I installed Java 1.6 Beta 2 and... IE RUNS NOW! And I didn't loose any bookmarks. At least Firefox runs reliably so I can reply to these responses.
Many thank to Todd - well done.

Your welcome
Something that I forgot to say, I didn't try this but some people have reported that you can leave Java 5 installed if you turn off UAC.
